How to become a freelance writer

My story in 280 words

Baby Copywriter - Steve MintoBelieve it or not, this is how it all started. A happy, bouncing baby with cute blonde curls. OK, I agree – I do seem to be wearing some kind of dress which may well be pink. This is something that I need to discuss with mum the next time I visit.

Like all babies, I was a blank page. ‘A’ is for apple, ‘B’ is for ball. Pretty soon I’d mastered the whole alphabet. It wasn’t until I’d worked my way through the entire children’s book section in the local library that I had an idea that, one day, I might become a writer.

Sooner or later, every child’s dream comes true, though not always in the way that she or he might expect.

Here I am writing an ‘about me’ page for my own freelance copywriting website. OK, I’m never going to win the Pulitzer Prize for literature, but which other job allows me to work from home, clocking in and out of the building whenever I please? Which other job would give me and Henry (our cocker spaniel) hours of thinking time as we explore the hills and forests of Northumberland on our daily walks? Which other job would allow me to work with some the brightest entrepreneurs on the planet – and earn a living from telling their amazing stories!

This feels like just the right time for a quote about writing …

“This is how you do it: you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until its done. It’s that easy, and that hard.”

Neil Gaiman
